“We’re on target to exceed our planned growth due to a simplified strategic business plan combined with quarterly action plans.” Plumbing, heating, and cooling company owner and Growth Plan Business Planning Workshop attendee
A simple business plan is the way to go when it comes to planning for your business. If it’s simple, you’ll be more apt to create it in the first place. And you’ll be more apt to actually check back against it if it’s all on 1 page – you can hang right in front of your desk.
I don’t believe in long, drawn-out business plans that could fill a binder, or even a file folder. I use Verne Harnish’s “1-Page Strategic Plan” template because it lets you see both the long-term components of your business plan and your short-term what-should-I-be-working-on-today goals.
“Business is much improved – from no plan to an actual business plan.” Veterinarian and Growth Plan Business Planning Workshop attendee
If you’re like me, it’s hard as a business owner to imagine taking time out from the day-to-day to think about where you want to be in the future and then set goals to get there. But it seems a lot more do-able if you think you only have to pull out of your day-to-day for 1 day in order to walk away with a simple business plan. I’m talking about a simple business plan that gives you
- A clear picture of where you want to be in 10-30 years
- A 3-5 year plan
- A 90-day plan, &
- A ready-to-implement action plan to get you there
“I’m more determined to plan my dream!” Accounting Firm Owner and Growth Plan Business Planning Workshop attendee
At the end of the time of your business, how do you picture your life? Looking out 5, 10, 15, 20 years, depending on your age, what kind of life do you want to be living? What properties, businesses, cash, cars do you want to have? What hobbies, investments, donations, achievements, vacations? What will your values, church life, physical health, friendships, family be like? You want to make sure the simple business plan you’re building will produce your desired personal outcome.
Committing your simple business plan to paper gives you a sense from a personal perspective what you want to get out of the business… so you can create the kind of business outcome that’ll produce the personal outcome you want. Your personal vision informs the discussion about your business vision. It dictates the size or type of biz you want to build or the type of customers you want to attract.
If you don’t have a simple business plan to guide your business operation, I run a 1-day workshop in central Indiana, pricing it only to cover my cost, where business owners come together and complete their 1-Page Strategic Plans.
