KEEP MOVING and Other Tips for Conquering the Challenges of a Growing Business

12/27/2013 | Roger and Susie Engelau

When you’re first starting a new business, you look ahead to each milestone with yearning.  When I finally hit $100K…$500K…$1 Million…$5 Million…THEN all these problems will be resolved and it’ll be smooth sailing.

Sound familiar?

If only it were true!

The fact is, each new phase of growth brings new challenges.  New skills to be developed.  New problems to overcome.  New systems to create.  New team members to recruit.  New concepts to master.

I’m not telling you this to discourage you, but to point out a fundamental truth that’s applicable not just in business but in life generally.

And that is: success is the result of forward progress.

If you haven’t yet, lock that into your mind right now and let go of any notion that growth will come easy.  No matter how successful you become, there’s never a time you’ll stop growing, stop reaching, stop being challenged.  There’s never a time you can put your business or life on autopilot. There’ll never come a time when you finally arrive  Life’s in constant motion, and even if you have your systems honed to a “T,” there’ll always be another shift in the market, industry, or economy that will require more adaptation, more growth.

More forward progress.

And here’s something else to consider, in case you’re still clinging to that picture you have of your business when it finally reaches its next big milestone.  A recent survey said that 87% of business owners STRUGGLE when their business grows in size and gets more complicated.

That’s because there’s a lot more that goes into running an $8 million business than an $800K business.

Or as renowned business thought leader, Marshall Goldsmith says, “What got you here will not get you there.”

So how do you adjust?  How do you prepare and adapt and ensure that you’re moving—and not just moving, but moving in the right direction?

You plan for it.

You know those milestones you have in mind?  There are things you can do to bring them faster.  What’s more, there are things you can do to be ready when they come—so that you can move through each challenge quickly and get to the next milestone, then the next, then the next.

No, it’s not gonna be easy.

But it’s gonna be a heckuva ride.

And just in time for the new year, I want to invite you to attend our first Growth Plan Workshop of 2014.  This is where we walk you through the process of planning effectively for growth, so that you can keep your forward progress and struggle less as you move through the process of building a profitable enterprise.
